Mario Monicelli, the Oscar nominated director of films such as Casanova’70, committed suicide on 29th November 2010. He was 95.
Mario, who had been suffering from prostate cancer for several years, leapt from the 5th floor window of the San Giovanni hospital in Rome.
The Berlin International Film Festival released the following statement:
The Berlinale was deeply saddened to hear of the death of Italian director Mario Monicelli.
Monicelli was one of the most important Italian post-war directors and a master of the comedy genre. The multi-award winning director and screenwriter also received four Oscar nominations for films including The Strikers (I Compagni) in 1963 and for Casanova’70 in 1965.
“With Mario Monicelli, we have lost a great director, who was a committed and critical observer of Italian society to the last,” says Berlinale Director Dieter Kosslick.
Mario Monicelli presented a large number of his films at the Berlin International Film Festival. He was awarded the Silver Bear for Best Director for three of these films: Fathers And Sons (1957), Caro Michele (1976) and The Marquis Of Grillo (1982).
One of Monicelli’s films will be shown at the 61st Berlin International Film Festival in honour of the deceased director.
