The Barbican, London will play host to the 3rd Fashion In Film Festival, between Saturday, 4th and Sunday, 5th December 2010.
Under the banner ‘Birds Of Paradise’, the event will explore costume as a form of cinematic spectacle through sumptuous and rarely screened European films of the silent era. The programme revolves around the dangerous yet hypnotising allure of the sensuously attired and morally ambiguous dancing diva or showgirl of the early 20th century, captured on film from 1899 through to 1928 with live musical accompaniment.
Four shorts will be screened on the opening day, under the title ‘Dreams Of Darkness And Colour’, before an evening screening of La Princesse Mandane, a rarely-screened commercial feature from Germaine Dulac, a director better known for her avant-garde work. Here her brazen embrace of fashionable costume and glamour creates a witty celebration of Orientalism and cinema itself.
Sunday sees the programme close with two silent films by Hungarian director Michael Curtiz (Casablanca): Red Heels, which sees Lily Damita stars as a dancer who tries to give up the stage for her new English husband; and The Golden Butterfly, featuring spectacular dance routines and art direction from the expressionist ‘master of atmospheric mysteries’ Paul Leni.
