NEWS: Cinéphilia Club’s Dinner Club: Thailand

Cinéphilia West’s ‘members only' event, in which they travel the world in food and film, visits Thailand.

“A fine Thai feast awaits twelve lucky people and their guests, followed by a democratically- decided-upon screening from a selection of three films of the country including Pen-Ek Ratanaruang's Last Life In The Universe and Apichatpong Weerasethakul's Tropical Malady.”

After indulging in food and wine, guests will be invited downstairs to watch the film in the comfort of our very own screening lounge.

There are only two places left as this post goes live, at a cost of £55 per head.

NEWS: London MCM Expo

This coming Bank Holiday weekend (29th to 30th May) sees the 17th London MCM Expo taking place at London's ExCel centre. Both Manga Entertainment and MVM will be in attendance.

There will be an early chance to purchase new DVD collections of Disgaea and Gunparade March -ahead of their 7th June 2010 release; Mamoru Oshii's Sky Crawlers on DVD and Blu-ray, ahead of its official release on Monday, 31st May; the DVD launch of two new anime series, Soul Eater and Naruto Shippuden; and a sneak peak of the forthcoming anime feature, Professor Layton And The Eternal Diva.

NEWS: New Generation: Chinese

Cinéphilia West are staging an event spread across four evenings (27th-30th May 2010), entitled New Generation: Chinese. The event will “showcase of some of the latest and most innovative and exciting films made by the young generation Chinese filmmakers.”

In a series of four screenings (featuring documentaries, animations, fictions and experimental videos), the event intends to present a new vision of contemporary China, under the themes of 'Absurdity And Reality', 'Lost In Now? - Dream, Memory And Fantasy', 'Merging Fiction And Documentary?', and 'Searching For Identity'.

“The young film talents are mostly born and grown up in post-socialist China, and they take a more personal and even first-person approach representing Chinese social reality.” Among the showcased films, many are best selections from the Chongqing Independent Film And Video Festival, China.

The event will be presented by the London-based Magic Cube, which curates and programmes contemporary Chinese independent film and video works. “Promoting international collaborations and exchange between China and abroad, Magic Cube represents emerging innovative young generation film/video makers, mostly born in post-socialist China.”

NEWS: European Political Cinema

The Cornerhouse in Manchester will be hosting sessions on European Political Cinema, starting on Monday, 17th May 2010.

Led by Carmen Herrero (Head of Spanish) and Isabelle Vanderschelden (Senior Lecturer in French), both from Manchester Metropolitan University, this beginners level course explores political and social issues in contemporary Europe, through French, Belgian and Spanish films.

NEWS: Animated Worlds

Cinéphilia West are showing the films of award-winning Russian animator Yuri Norstein on Sunday, 16th May 2010.

In 2002, his film Tale Of Tales was voted to be the greatest animated film of all time by an international jury at the Zagreb World Festival of Animated Films.

The eighth episode of Animated Worlds will focus on the works of Yuri Norstein and will include all of all his films to date.

NEWS: Himalaya Film & Cultural Festival

Filmhouse and Satsang Productions present Scotland’s first festival of Himalayan film and culture, taking place at venues across Edinburgh from 14th to 22nd May 2010.

Filmhouse will showcase six films from countries of the Himalayan Region - telling stories of mountain life and examining issues facing the Region.

Opening the film season on 14th May is Eric Valli’s Best Foreign Language Oscar nominated film Himalaya, “a classic tale of wisdom and adventure” set against the spectacular Dolpo region of Nepal.

There are two films from award winning Bhutanese director Khyentse Norbu; The Cup, a semi-autobiographical tale of monks obsessed with the 1998 World Cup soccer final; and Travellers And Magicians, the story of one man’s journey in search of a better life and the people he meets along the way.

Chinese filmmaking is represented by Kekexili: Mountain Patrol, a moving true story about a people’s remarkable mission to prevent the illegal poaching of Tibetan antelope in the region of Kekexili, the largest nature reserve in China.

The season also includes two documentaries: Delamu follows the highest and most perilous of the world’s ancient trading routes, the Tea-Horse Road that climbs from Western Yunnan through the Himalayas into Tibet, Nepal and Bhutan; while Tibet: Cry Of The Snow Lion uses interviews, archival footage and previously unseen photographs to portray the reality of life in Tibet under Chinese rule.

NEWS: Cinéphilia Club’s Dinner Club: Mexico

The second in the series of 'members only' events at the Cinéphilia West, sees them taking in the food and film of Mexico!

Twelve people will tuck into a feast and then a democratically-decided-upon screening from a selection of three suggested Mexican films.

Although this is a ‘members only’ event, it will still set back each individual £55.

Each month, on the 'first Friday', the cinema takes a visit to a different national cuisine and cinema tradition. Only open to 12 people, members alone or with one guest, these special events are invitations to enjoy “a communal home-made meal followed by a great film in a comfortable and intimate screening lounge.”

The next 'Dinner Club', on 4th June 2010, will be a journey to Thailand!

NEWS: London Palestine Film Festival

The 2010 London Palestine Film Festival kicked off on Friday, 30th May 2010, with a screening of The Time That Remains at the Barbican.

The event, which is being held until 14th May 2010 at the Barbican and SOAS, is also screening films such as Je Veux Voir and Jaffa: The Orange’s Clockwork, whilst there are director introductions/Q&As, panel discussions, and thematic sessions.

NEWS: Cannes Survival Guide 2010

Cinéphilia West are staging a Cannes Survival Guide on 4th May 2010.

Priced at £20 per person, the two hour event (7-9pm) will be compered by British producer and film festival veteran, Anita Lewton (Corazon Films UK).

“Discover who goes and what they will want to hear from budding filmmakers anxious to discuss their projects. What to prepare, where to go and what to wear! Plus information about the recent competition line-up and how to get into the parties afterwards!”

The 63rd Festival De Cannes will be staged on 12th-23rd May 2010.

NEWS: Terracotta Far East Film Festival

London’s Terracotta East Film Festival 2010 will be staged on 6th-9th May 2010 at the Prince Charles Cinema (7 Leicester Place), The Slug And Lettuce (5 Lisle Street) and Waxy's Little Sister (corner of Lisle Street and Wardour Street).

Tickets (which went on sale Thursday, 8th April 2010) cost £7.50 per film (£6.00 for Prince Charles Cinema Members), whilst a Festival Pass will set you back £70 (£55 for Prince Charles Cinema Members), but gives you access to all the films, with your own reserved seat.
