“I love films that give me an unconventional, offbeat view of the world, and many of the best of these happen to have been made outside the English-speaking world. I’ve been interested in different cultures from a young age, and foreign-language films often offer a glimpse of different ways of thinking and living that may otherwise not be visible to us. Many of the foreign-language films I enjoy seem to have been made primarily out of a love of cinema and storytelling, rather than just a desire to make a lot of money. There is a sense of independence and a willingness to take risks in such films that I find inspiring.”

“I’m a freelance arts journalist, photographer and artist with a passion for film, music and art. I have spent most of my life in South Africa, where my parents emigrated to from Sheffield in the mid-60s, but part of my childhood was spent in Sheffield, and I’ve lived in Glasgow for the past three years. when I’m not writing or listening to music (as I’m writing this, I’m listening to a collection of South African mbaqanga from the 1960s and ‘70s), I enjoy focusing on overlooked details of Glasgow to photograph, and I recently started collecting discarded/lost gloves that I find in the streets.
