“I would never argue that everything emanating from outside of Hollywood is fantastic – all countries produce their fair share of depressing cinema – but the feeling is even when a country in Asia, for example, gets it wrong, they are at least looking to push the envelope and challenge, with original and engrossing filmmaking (when they get it right, it’s absolutely spectacular). There aren’t the same restrictions or the narrow mindset you find with mainstream cinema, and they have the capacity to stretch budgetary constraints – even independent British/American cinema, which many perceive as the jewels from these countries, has become tired and formulaic (and safe). You only have to look at the number of Hollywood remakes in recent years, and those in the pipeline, and even the best of Hollywood’s recent releases have been substandard reinterpretations (take Scorsese, as an example, once a maverick/trailblazer, now winning Oscars for films like The Departed - a poor imitation of Infernal Affairs), or from directors who steal shamelessly from world cinema (Quentin Tarantino the most obvious example).”
Favourite Films: Lady Vengeance, Infernal Affairs, The Orphanage, Zatoichi, Shutter
Favourite Genres: Crime, Horror, Fantasy, Martial Arts, Thriller
“I’ve worked as a journalist for nigh on ten years within the music industry, and much of that time was spent as Editor-in-Chief and Designer of an internationally sold Blues music magazine. I’ve had the opportunities to cover shows by everyone from Bob Dylan to Pink, Oasis to La Roux, and I’ve interviewed many of my all-time favourite recording artists, including the likes of Steve Winwood, Gomez, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and Dr. John. Music will always be a passion, and I intend to continue freelancing, but the goal is to produce a fantastic website concentrating on my love for world cinema, provide a useful resource for fellow fans otherwise given poor service in the UK.”
